2 – Is Hell Real? Did Jesus Ever Talk About Hell? Hell Scriptures From Jesus

Yes, Hell is Real! Jesus Talked & Warned All About Hell & The Lake of Fire—

Hell is Mentioned 53 times in the Bible. Even though this is Bad News for ALL, the Good News is that God made a Way of Escape from Hell through Jesus Christ— as we will talk about below!

Video: Jesus Describes Hell

An Excellent (important) Message & Warning about HELL by Dr John Barnett—
formerly an Associate Pastor to Dr John MacArthur at Grace Community Church in CA & a Professor at the Master’s Seminary.

  • Matthew 23:33 Jesus says, “Snakes! Sons of vipers! (Pharisees) How will you escape the Judgment of HELL?”
  • Matthew 25:29-30 Jesus says, “To those who use well what they are given, even MORE will be given, and they will have an ABUNDANCE. But from those who do NOTHING, even what little they have will be taken away. Now throw this USELESS SERVANT into OUTER DARKNESS, where there will be WEEPING & GNASHING OF TEETH.”
  • Matthew 25:41 Jesus says, “Then the King will turn to those on the left and say, ‘Away with you, you cursed ones, into the Eternal Fire (HELL) prepared for the Devil and His Demons.”
  • Matthew 25:46 Jesus says, “And they will go away into Eternal Punishment (HELL), but the Righteous will go into Eternal Life.”
  • Mark 9:43-48 Jesus says, “If your HAND causes you to SIN, Cut It Off. It’s better to enter Eternal Life with only ONE HAND than to go into the UNQUENCHABLE FIRE OF HELL with TWO HANDS … If your FOOT causes you to SIN, Cut It Off. It’s better to enter Eternal Life with only ONE FOOT than to be THROWN INTO HELL with TWO FEET… And if your EYE causes you to SIN, Gouge It Out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only ONE EYE than to have TWO EYES and be THROWN INTO HELL, where the MAGGOTS NEVER DIE and the FIRE NEVER GOES OUT.”
  • Luke 6:24-26 Jesus says, “What SORROWS AWAITS YOU who are RICH, for you have your only Happiness now. What SORROWS AWAITS YOU who are FAT & PROSPEROUS now, for a time of AWFUL HUNGER awaits you. What SORROWS AWAITS YOU who LAUGH NOW, for YOUR LAUGHING WILL TURN TO MOURNING AND SORROW. What SORROWS AWAITS YOU who are PRAISED BY THE CROWDS, for their Ancestors also Praised FALSE PROPHETS.”
  • Luke 12:5 Jesus says, “I’ll tell you whom to Fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then THROWN INTO HELL. Yes, he’s the one to Fear.”

  • Matthew 10:28 Jesus says, “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both SOUL AND BODY IN HELL.”
  • Luke 16:19-31 Jesus says in (Luke 16:23-24 only), “His Soul (Rich Man) went to the place of the dead. There, in TORMENT, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side. “The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some Pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames….”
  • Matthew 13:41-43 Jesus says about Himself: “The Son of Man (Jesus) will send His Angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes Sin and all who do Evil. And the Angels will throw them into the Fiery Furnace, where there will be WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH. Then the Righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom.”
  • Matthew 13:49-50 Jesus says, “That is the way it will be at the End of the World. The Angels will come and separate the Wicked people from the Righteous, throwing the Wicked into the FIERY FURNACE, where there will be WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH.”

  • In Matthew 7:13-14 “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the Narrow Gate. The HIGHWAY TO HELL IS BROAD, and its Gate is Wide for the MANY who choose that way. But the Gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it.”
  • Matthew 7:21-23 Jesus warns, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who DO the Will of My Father in Heaven will enter. On Judgment Day MANY will say to Me ‘Lord! Lord! We Prophesied, Cast out demons, and Performed many Miracles in Your Name.’ But I will reply, ‘I Never Knew you. 6 – Are There Different Degrees of Punishment in Hell?

Video: Hell – Three Reasons to Fear God – John MacArthur

YES. Just are there will be different Rewards in Heaven for Believers, there will be different Degrees of Punishment for Unbelievers based on what they: KNEW & on their DEEDS.

  • Luke 12:47-48 Jesus says, “And a Servant who knows what the Master WANTS, but ISN’T PREPARED and DOESN’T carry out those Instructions (what is written in God’s Word), will be SEVERELY PUNISHED. But someone who does NOT KNOW, and then does something wrong, will be Punished only LIGHTLY. When someone has been GIVEN MUCH, MUCH WILL BE REQUIRED in return; and when someone has been ENTRUSTED WITH MUCH, even MORE will be REQUIRED.”
  • Rev 20:12-13 “I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s Throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were JUDGED according to what they had DONE, as recorded in the Books. The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were JUDGED ACCORDING TO THEIR DEEDS.”

8 – What Are The Different Names of Hell?

Hades

  • Hades is the Greek Word most commonly used for the Hebrew Word Sheol.
  • Sheol, for the record, is typically known in various translations as “Grave,” “Hell,” “Pit.”
  • Hades is the Place where Unsaved people go immediately after they Die (Lk 16:19-31).
  • Hades, is like being sent to Jail (so to speak, and in elementary terms) where Unsaved People are in Torment, awaiting to be summoned to appear before JUDGE JESUS (Matt 13:41-43, Matt 7:21-23), at the Final Judgment: The Great White Throne Judgment (Rev 20:11-15), and are found GUILTY. They will then be sentenced and then sent to the Final Prison which is: Hell / The Lake of Fire.
  • There are NO Exits out of Hades.
  • Jesus tells a story of a Rich Man who died in Luke 16:19-31 and was sent to Hades.
  • Earlier Translations of “Hades” (King James Version) most often translate Hades as “Hell”.

Sheol

  • This is the Old Testament Name for the Place where people go when they die (without the Lord), much like the New Testament word “Hades”.
  • In the King James Bible, the Old Testament term Sheol is translated as “Hell” 31 times.
  • Modern translations, however, do not translate Sheol as “Hell” at all, instead calling it “the grave,” “the Pit,” or “death. When translated “Hell” it refers to the place of punishment, but when translated “grave” the reference is to the souls of good men.

Tartarus

  • Tartarus is a Place where the Demons who disobeyed God in Noah’s Day— are Bound in Chains, in darkness (Jude 1:6).
  • It’s a Prison for Angels (2 Pet 2:4), who will be confined their until the final Judgment (2 Pet 2:4, Rev 20:11-15, Jude 1:6), OR during the Great Tribulation Period, when many of these Demons will be loosed for a short time on the Earth to inflict pain on people.
  • Tartarus is also believed to be Lower in the Earth than Hades. Jesus visited Tartarus after he died on the Cross (Psalms 16:10, 1 Pet 3:19). Both Old & New Bible Translations always translate Tartarus as “Hell.”

9 – What Is Abraham’s Bosom? Where was Jesus between His Death & Resurrection?

Video: Jesus Went To Hell?

The term “Abraham’s bosom” is found only once in the New Testament, in the story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), in which Jesus was teaching about was the reality of heaven and hell. “Abraham’s bosom” in this story is also translated “Abraham’s side” (NIV, ESV), “next to Abraham” (CEV), “with Abraham” (NLT), and “the arms of Abraham” (NCV). These various translations speak to the enigmatic nature of the Greek word kolpos. All these translations are attempting to convey the sense that Lazarus went to a place of rest, contentment, and peace, almost as though Abraham (a highly revered person in Jewish history) was the protector or patron. In a sad contrast, the rich man finds himself in torment with no one to help, assist or console him. Contrary to some contemporary thought, the Bible does teach that both heaven and hell are real places. Each person who lives will spend eternity in one of these two places. These two destinies are portrayed in Jesus’ story. While the rich man had lived for the day and only focused on life here on earth, Lazarus endured many hardships while trusting in God. So, verses 22 and 23 are significant: “So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”Death can be thought of as separation. Physical death is the separation of our body from our soul/spirit, while spiritual death is the separation of our soul from God. Jesus taught that we ought not to fear physical death, but we should be most concerned about spiritual death. As we read in Luke 12:4-5, Jesus also said, “And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” Jesus’ use of the term “Abraham’s bosom” was a part of His teaching to focus the minds of His hearers on the fact that our choices to seek God or disregard Him here on earth literally affect where we spend eternity. (Source: Got Questions)

  • Luke 16:19-31 Jesus said, “There was a certain Rich Man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his Gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores. As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.”Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to be with Abram (MOST TRANSLATIONS SAY: ABRAHAM’S BOSOM HERE).The Rich Man also died and was buried, and his soul went to the place of the dead (Hades). There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.”The Rich Man shouted, `Father Abraham, have some Pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.'”But Abraham said to him, `Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.” Then the rich man said, `Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.'”But Abraham said, `Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.'”The Rich Man replied, `No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.'”But Abraham said, `If they won’t listen to Moses and the Prophets (READ GOD’S WORD & OBEY IT), they won’t listen even if someone rises from the dead (Jesus).”

Where was Jesus for the Three Days between His Death & Resurrection?
Did Jesus Go To Hell?

Video: Jesus Proclaimed to the Prisoners in Prison?

1 Peter 3:18–19 (ESV) says, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.” The word spirit refers to Christ’s spirit. The contrast is between His flesh and spirit, and not between Christ’s flesh and the Holy Spirit. Christ’s flesh died, but His spirit remained alive. 1 Peter 3:18–22 describes a necessary link between Christ’s suffering (verse 18) and His glorification (verse 22). Only Peter gives specific information about what happened between these two events. The KJV says that Jesus “preached” to the spirits in prison (verse 19). However, the Greek word used is not the usual New Testament word for preaching the gospel. It simply means “to herald a message”; the NIV translates it as “made proclamation.” Jesus suffered and died on the cross, His body being put to death. But His spirit was made alive, and He yielded it to the Father (Luke 23:46). According to Peter, sometime between Jesus’ death and His resurrection Jesus made a special proclamation to “the spirits in prison.”In the New Testament, the word spirits is used to describe angels or demons, not human beings. In 1 Peter 3:20, Peter refers to people as “souls” (KJV). Also, nowhere in the Bible are we told that Jesus visited hell. Acts 2:31 says that He went to Hades (New American Standard Bible), but Hades is not hell. Hades is a term that refers, broadly, to the realm of the dead, a temporary place where the dead await resurrection. Revelation 20:11–15 in the NASB and the NIV makes a clear distinction between the Hades and the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the permanent, final place of judgment for the lost. Hades is a temporary place for both the lost and the Old Testament saints. Our Lord yielded His spirit to the Father, died physically, and entered paradise (Luke 23:43). At some time between His death and resurrection, Jesus also visited a place where He delivered a message to spirit beings (probably fallen angels; see Jude 1:6); these beings were somehow related to the period before the flood in Noah’s time (1 Peter 3:20). Peter does not tell us what Jesus proclaimed to the imprisoned spirits, but it could not be a message of redemption since angels cannot be saved (Hebrews 2:16). It was probably a declaration of victory over Satan and his hosts (1 Peter 3:22; Colossians 2:15). Ephesians 4:8–10 also seems to give a clue regarding Jesus’ activities in the time between His death and resurrection. Quoting Psalm 68:18, Paul says about Christ, “when he ascended on high, he took many captives” (Ephesians 4:8). The ESV puts it that Christ “led a host of captives.” The reference seems to be that, in paradise, Jesus gathered all the redeemed who were there and took them to their permanent dwelling in heaven. All this to say, the Bible isn’t entirely clear what exactly Christ did for the three days between His death and resurrection. From what we can tell, though, He comforted the departed saints and brought them to their eternal home, and He proclaimed His victory over the fallen angels who are kept in prison. What we can know for sure is that Jesus was not giving anyone a second chance for salvation; we face judgment after death (Hebrews 9:27), not a second chance. Also, He was not suffering in hell; His work of redemption was finished on the cross (John 19:30). (Source: Got Questions)

  • 1 Peter 3:18-22 “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. (19) SO HE WENT AND PREACHED TO THE SPIRITS IN PRISON— those who disobeyed God long ago when God waited patiently while Noah was building his boat. Only eight people were saved from drowning in that terrible flood. ….(22) Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority.

And the Dead were JUDGED according to what they had DONE, as recorded in the Books. The sea gave up its dead, and Death and the Grave gave up their dead. And all were JUDGED according to their DEEDS.
